Your area is getting a mayor – have your say
In the Budget, Labour announced 9 new mayors across England, covering: Devon, Plymouth & Torbay; Hertfordshire; Lancashire; Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland; Stoke & Staffordshire; Surrey; Thames Valley; and Wessex; Kent and Medway and a new ‘Foundation’ strategic authority for Cornwall.
Under Labour’s new devolution law, these mayors can add their own charge to your council tax bill and introduce new levies on development. They can also step in on major planning decisions in your area.
Local people haven’t been asked whether they want one. When ten cities were offered an elected mayor in referendums in 2012, nine said no. This time there’s no vote.
